Hi,
My grandmother, Elsie Smith (nee Woodcock - 1906 - 1973) came from Barnsley in, what then was, the West Riding of Yorkshire. Her father died when she was eight and, though her mother survived, a woman called Laura Sackenfeld, (Sackenfeld was her married name), wrote to her often).
Laura Sackenfeld lived in East Barnet and was married at the church there. I have a magnificent photpgraph of the wedding but, unfortunately, it is not dated. I also have a postcard of a street in East Barnet but, of course I have no idea where it is located.
My grandmother visited Mr. and Mrs. Sackenfeld circa 1913 and this is the postcard that was sent back to Barnsley. I also have a damaged postcard of East Barnet Church.
The Sackenfelds went to Riga, Russia, now Latvia. He worked at a rubber company there. They send wonderful picture postards with Russian scenes on to my grandmother.
I would love to know the maiden name of Laura Sackenfeld. The marriage entry would give it and her age.
I have no idea who these people were and why they wanted to adopt my grandmother but I have had an affinity with this woman for more than fifty years. I wrote to the local newspapers several years ago but didn't hear anything.
There are not any Sackenfelds in the census at all.
I would deeply appreciate any information. If you wish to have a copy of the postcards of the street in which Laura lived and/or the church I would be happy to send this to you.
Kind regards,
Daran Johnson
